Ration Saathi is a mobile web app that helps Indian citizens apply for, track, and manage their ration card — the government card families use each month to get subsidized food — using nothing but a phone number.

Applying for or fixing a ration card can fail for a dozen reasons — a document that doesn't match, a fingerprint scanner that won't read a worn print, a card flagged during routine re-verification. The real problem isn't any single cause. It's that when something goes wrong, the system doesn't say what. People are simply told to come back, with no idea whether this next trip is the one that works. Biometric failure is the sharpest example of this — fingerprints genuinely wear down with age and years of manual labour, so elderly citizens and manual labourers are hit hardest — but it's one symptom of a system-wide silence, not the whole problem.
We can't fix a fingerprint scanner, and we don't try to. What we can fix is the silence around it: whatever went wrong — a document, a scan, a flagged review — a person should always be able to see exactly what's wrong and what to do next, instead of guessing.
The Public Distribution System feeds hundreds of millions of families across India — but for many of them, getting a new card, fixing a mistake, or even just knowing where their application stands means taking time off work, standing in a line with no visibility into what happens next, and hoping someone remembers to update the register.
Ration Saathi is our attempt to close that gap — a simple, phone-only way to apply, track, and manage a ration card without needing anything more than a mobile number. No Aadhar collection, no paperwork you can't check the status of, no wondering if your application is stuck. Built for the Build What Moves India hackathon, because the systems that feed people deserve software that respects their time.
